Some People Are Truly Hateful

This past Tuesday in Bardstown, just a county or two from where I live, there was a house fire that killed ten people, six of them children. This was the worst house fire in the state since 1977. There's not much you can say about such a horrific loss. While such things have happened before, and such things will happen again, you feel completely awful for those who must be hurting in a way I hope I never have to.

I'm sure that the community has been nothing but supportive and comforting in a time when all decent human beings try to help each other out.

But the town of Bardstown is about to get some unwelcome outsiders.

"A controversial church group from Kansas is announcing plans to protest before the funeral of the victims of Tuesday's fatal house fire in Bardstown. [snip]

A spokeswoman for the Westboro Baptist Church says the protest will be to show that, "the victim's deaths are God's punishment for a nation that has disobeyed God's will."

Like flies to excrement, the Fred Phelps cult will descend on Bardstown to human suffering as a podium. First it was the funerals of homosexuals they descecrated, and then of soldiers, but now it is the victims of random devastation who must suffer their hate.

It's cliche' I know, but you always expect something like this to happen somewhere else.

I do not know what else to say about this. I'm sure that the loved ones of those lost will be kept quarantined as much as possible from these folks swarming in to use their grief for their hateful purposes.

What is comforting though, is a proper response mentioned later in the same news story.

"A date for the funeral has not been set although people remembered the victims Wednesday night.

Hundreds of people packed Bardstown's First Baptist Church to pray for the victims of the fire."

Two groups, both calling themselves Baptist, taking two completely opposite paths when it comes to the suffering of their fellow human beings.
